Why Detox Centers?

If someone you know has a drug addiction you already know that they need help.  The question often faced is why should I send them to a detox center?  Can’t they just break their addiction at home or with a friend?  We hear this question often and there are several reasons why this is a very tough way to try and kick and very difficult habit to kick.

Being in a familiar atmosphere

Something about the atmosphere a drug user is already in isn’t stopping them from using currently.  They are comfortable.  They know who they can talk to and where to go to get what they want.  This ranges from things as nefarious as actually acquiring illicit substances all the way to which parent is more easy to manipulate into getting what they want or how to arrange transportation to get where they want to be.  Their current environment may not be a contributing factor to their drug use, but it likely isn’t a deterrent at this point either.  Getting someone out of their comfort zone and into a new place and around new people is a critical step in breaking a habit.  Going back to familiar feelings, settings, and actions is much more difficult when you are surrounded by unfamiliar people and surroundings.

Detoxing can be dangerous

Whenever someone is detoxing from either drug or alcohol abuse their is the very real chance of going into withdrawal.  While many people believe that withdrawal symptoms are just very painful or uncomfortable for the person going through them they are underestimating the danger being faced.  Withdrawal symptoms are essentially a body shutdown in response to not getting the chemical it is expecting.  In many cases this can be fatal, so it is extremely important to be under medical supervision when going through this.  Being around staff trained to help with both the physical and mental symptoms of withdrawal  can be the difference between life and death.
